Assistant Director, University Publications

Based in University Publications, the assistant director will serve as a key member of the institutional communication team, working on University Relations divisional priorities including print and digital projects, presentations, photo and video, events and other communication and public relations activities. Critical to the position are strong communication skills, both written and verbal, as well as substantial experience in higher education communication. Collaborating with creative staff on workflow will be a primary responsibility, as well as serving as a University Publications liaison between University clients, services and vendors.  

Scope of responsibilities

This individual will provide editorial services, project management and client support throughout the institution, coordinating with Rowan staff, clients and freelance designers. The position requires considerable editorial and production skill and experience working with project teams, including clients, creative staff and vendors (photographers, printers, etc.). While this is not a graphic design position, deep experience with the graphic design process and working knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite, specifically, InDesign, are critical. Functional skill with MS Word and Google applications are essential, as is ability to develop skill in publishing platforms such as Animoto, Exposure and other technology.

Typical work will include institutional communication campaigns; project research; annual and special events; copywriting, project management and client service; online publishing; working with photographers, printers and other contractors; developing white papers, proposals and reports. Editing content at different stages of the production cycle is key, with a keen eye for brand voice and communication objectives. Must have ability to prepare and work on special projects and events off regular hours. A strong customer service ethic and commitment to collaboration and education are critical.

Requirements
Minimum of two years of professional experience in higher education communication administration and bachelor’s degree in related field.

Applicants should be prepared for an interview, a portfolio review and a one-hour writing, editing and proofreading trial. High editorial competence and experience working on prestige publications, including magazines and executive-level projects are essential. Physical samples of work annotated with the applicant’s responsibilities in production will be required once applicants advance to interview.
