Principal Engineer, AI
Are you an AI expert who enjoys not only writing software, but specifically ideating, creating, and applying generative AI to software solutions? Rowan University is seeking an innovative AI expert to join our growing community.
 
Rowan is embarking on an AI journey that will re-engineer, re-design, and revamp higher education. As such, this position will be instrumental in shaping the university’s future and is a unique opportunity to use technology to improve upon and expand a state institution that impacts the lives of tens of thousands of students, faculty, and staff each year.
 
In this position, you will work with any and all technology teams to support your creativity and expertise. You will be able to take advantage of IRT’s support for training and growth in your own career. As a member of the Enterprise Applications Software Development department who handles software development, ERP, integrations, cloud software, database administration, AI, and change management for the University, you will have access to development of not only custom software solutions, but also integration with and enhancement of the third-party solutions supporting the university’s software ecosystem. This is a crucial role on a collaborative team making a big difference in a broad community.
 
General Responsibilities
  • Provide technical leadership and mentorship to junior AI engineers and data scientists.
  • Lead the design and development of AI-driven solutions, leveraging extensive experience in software development.
  • You will partner and collaborate with all IRT teams to ideate, create, and build various AI features into new and existing user experiences and applications across the university and our medical schools.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate AI technologies (generative and machine learning) into existing systems and workflows.
  • Contribute to AI strategies that align with Rowan University’s goals and objectives.
  • Conduct research and stay updated on the latest advancements in AI and machine learning to ensure Rowan Enterprise Applications remains at the forefront of technology in the Higher Education space.
  • Design and oversee the deployment of scalable AI architectures that support high-performance computing and data processing.
  • Ensure the ethical and responsible use of AI technologies, adhering to industry standards and best practices, as well as the university’s AI policy.
  • Work closely with stakeholders to tailor AI solutions that meet the unique needs of the academic environment.
  • Rowan desires to be at the forefront of AI technology in higher education - the candidate should have experience in “greenfield” ideas and proofs of concept.
Required Qualifications
  • Graduation from an accredited college with a Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Software Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field
  • 2-years professional experience in software development, with a strong focus on generative AI and/or machine learning
  • Proven track record of designing and implementing AI-driven solutions in a professional setting
  • Expert proficiency in Python or C#
  • Experience in AI cloud technologies (Azure preferred, but AWS, or GCP will suffice)
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to think critically and creatively
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively in cross-functional teams
  • Knowledge of ethical considerations and best practices in AI development
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's degree in Computer Science or related field
  • Experience with Data Science in a professional setting
  • Deep understanding of generative AI models and algorithms
  • Experience with ML frameworks like TensorFlow, PyTorch, or similar
  • Experience or knowledge around the selection process and implementing third-party AI solutions and tools
  • Experience working in higher education or a similar environment
